BEAR MACHINE RECORDING STUDIO DIFFUSER WALL INSTALLATION

In 2018, I was commissioned by Ben Cooper of Radical Face and Bear Machine Records to create an interactive wall installation that would also serve as a sound diffuser for his newly built recording studio, with a total measurement of 17' long x 5' tall (except over door, 2' tall). Drawing inspiration from our shared aesthetic and the creativity of Foley sound effects artists of the past, I incorporated ample opportunities for the viewer to interact with the piece and entertain themselves during long studio sessions, rewarding the curious with vintage reading materials, solitary games and other easter eggs. Most items used are not what they seem and have a dual purpose, a washboard that can be played with the supplied thimbles or mallet, figurines that conceal bells, an old rotary phone dial and hidden dioramas. Rather than stowing away equipment, I included various display shelves to house microphones, pedals and other instruments to showcase them as part of the artwork as a whole. Housed in a sound-proofed room with no windows to allow in light, I saw the need to integrate various lighting features that can be customized to create an ambient mood or alternately, can all be turned on to provide ample task lighting for the otherwise dimly lit room. Shelves and nooks were intentionally left empty so the piece can evolve through items left behind by other artists who share the space during the creative process.

LOOKING LAB: Exhibit A: Zebra Longwing | David Montgomery x Crystal Floyd

Collaborative installation with David Montgomery for Looking Lab Jax on Bay Street in downtown Jacksonville. The exhibition featured projection mapped animations of the zebra longwing butterly, time lapse video of their caterpillars and a wire illuminated sculpture of their chrysalis surrounded by foliage that decays to show the passage of time.
